The lifespan of polycarbonate sheets depends on human factors. Theoretically, polycarbonate sheets can last five to ten years, but in practice, they rarely reach this duration, largely due to human-related issues. Every stage of polycarbonate sheet application involves manual handling, making human error highly impactful.
During processing, incorrect methods can damage the sheets. The installation phase is also a high-risk stage for sheet damage. If the protective film is removed or torn before installation is complete, or if the sheets are directly nailed to the framework, the surface and edges may be compromised. Additionally, improper storage conditions, such as damp environments, direct stacking, or storage alongside alkaline materials, can significantly reduce the lifespan of polycarbonate sheets. It is recommended to pay attention to these aspects to extend the service life of polycarbonate sheets.
Characteristics of Polycarbonate Sunlight Panels:
(1) Light Transmittance: PC sunlight panels offer up to 89% light transmittance, comparable to glass. UV-coated panels resist yellowing, fogging, and reduced transparency under sunlight, with only about 10% light transmittance loss after ten years. In contrast, PVC loses 15–20%, and fiberglass loses 12–20%.
(2) Impact Resistance: The impact strength is 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2–20 times that of tempered glass, earning it the nickname "unbreakable glass" or "resonant steel."
(3) UV Protection: One side of the PC panel is co-extruded with an anti-UV coating, while the other side features anti-condensation treatment, combining UV resistance, thermal insulation, and anti-fogging functions. It effectively blocks ultraviolet rays, making it ideal for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Lightweight: With a density about half that of glass, it reduces costs related to transportation, handling, installation, and support frameworks.
(5) Flame Retardancy: According to the GB50222—95 standard, PC sunlight panels are classified as flame-retardant (B1 grade). The self-ignition point of PC panels is around 580°C, and they self-extinguish upon removal from fire. They do not emit toxic gases during combustion and do not contribute to the spread of flames.
(6) Bendability: PC panels can be cold-bent on-site according to design plans to form arches, semi-circular roofs, and windows. The minimum bending radius is approximately 175 times the panel thickness, and they can also be heat-bent.
(7) Sound Insulation: PC sunlight panels offer significant sound insulation, outperforming glass and acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under identical conditions, they provide 5–9 dB higher sound insulation than glass, making them the material of choice for highway sound barriers.
(8) Energy Efficiency: PC sunlight panels keep interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. They have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics, offering 7–25% better thermal insulation than glass of the same thickness, with up to 49% insulation efficiency. This greatly reduces heat loss, making them suitable for buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature Adaptability: PC panels do not become brittle at -40°C and remain stable at 125°C. Their mechanical and physical properties show no significant changes under harsh environmental conditions.
(10) Weather Resistance: PC sunlight panels maintain stable physical properties within a temperature range of -40°C to 120°C. After 4,000 hours of artificial weathering tests, the yellowing index is only 2, and light transmittance loss is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-Condensation: At an outdoor temperature of 0°C and an indoor temperature of 23°C with relative humidity below 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation flows along the surface without dripping.
